As part of a more comprehensive international survey, the book investigates, including with appropriate comparisons, the traveling architect’s approach to natural elements and environmental themes. According to a predominantly historiographical perspective, the essays collected in the volume analyze narratives and representations produced during the journey, as well as the reworkings conceived upon return to the place of origin, to the point of grasping the concrete effects that the encounter with different landscapes and territorial contexts could suggest to the composition and design. In fact, although not of direct relevance to architecture, the phenomenological experience of different environmental conditions has over the centuries oriented and complemented the reflections of traveling architects on the city, cultural heritage and ways of living. The plurality of viewpoints collected in the volume returns a certainly unprecedented look at aspects hitherto only superficially treated by odeporic lettera- ture, and proves capable of rereading even very well-known histories and itineraries in the light of a new cultural sensibility, actually revealing multiple and original levels of interpretation. No longer a static background relegated to passive contemplation, the landscape then emerges from the critical perspective adopted in the book as a direct “invention” of the active, creative and already planning gaze of the traveling architect.
