Published to accompany the exhibition “Remains” in Pirelli HangarBicocca, the book presents the first complete overview of the thirty-year production of Sheela Gowda (Bhadravati, Karnataka, India, 1957; lives and works in Bangalore). Her practice—spanning from watercolors to prints, and from sculptures to installations—is characterized by a strong spatial dimension, assuming elements of Modernism as a starting point, elaborated by the artist via production processes featuring strong ritualistic references. Gowda’s work is distinguished by a large variety of materials—that refer to Indian culture—such as hair, organic substances, cow dung, incense, and natural pigments.The book contains an extended essay by art historian Geeta Kapur, a contribution by writer and curator Pablo Lafuente, together with a text by the exhibition curators Nuria Enguita and Lucia Aspesi. In addition to these latter, the catalogue offers readers commentaries and analysis by authors, curators, critics and art historians who, over the years, have delved into Sheela Gowda’s production.
