With this volume the Direzione Generale Arte e Architettura Contemporanee e Periferie Urbane (Office for Contemporary Art and Architecture, and Peripheral Urban Areas), whose strategic goals include the promotion of contemporary art, pays tribute to Jannis Kounellis, one of the most important artists of the second half of the twentieth century, who died recently. Greek by birth but Italian by adoption, the internationally known artist was a great experimentalist and one of the most original exponents of Arte Povera (‘Poor Art’). His performance with 12 live horses at the Galleria L’Attico in Rome in 1969 was truly unforgettable, as were his installations realized with scraps of meat, iron, sacks and fire. In his artistic practice Kounellis used different supports and techniques, including painting, sculpture, installation and graphic art, as attested by the last work presented at the Istituto Centrale per la Grafica (Central Institute of Graphic Arts), which has always worked hard to preserve, protect and promote the graphic arts. Besides including essays of great interest, the volume presents the works housed in the collections of the Istituto Centrale per la Grafica, plus three print editions expressly chosen by Kounellis before his death to represent his work in the field of the graphic arts.
