This fascicle of Etruscan mirrors from collections in Baltimore, Maryland, and Washington, D.C., has been extremely long in the making. I first began in 1974 to inquire about the existence and location of Etruscan mirrors in the southern United States, when I was appointed to the task by Larissa Bonfante, the U.S. representative to the international committee on the Corpus Speculorum Etruscorum. My qualifications for acceptance for this task lay chiefly in the fact that I had been trained as a student at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill by Emeline Hill Richardson, the nation’s leading Etruscologist of that period. This group of mirrors, once identified, formed a meaningful nucleus of material to be published together, although the items were in numerous museums at a considerable distance from my base at Florida State University in Tallahassee, Florida. Carole Law Trachy (Ph.D., FSU, 1977) assisted me in traveling and beginning documentation in photographs and drawings of the mirrors. While I was able to visit various locations to begin my study of the objects, I soon realized that proper results would involve alternating periods of research and personal examination of the pieces. As a strategy to deal with the problem of distance and travel, I conceived of having an exhibition in which the mirrors would come to Tallahassee to be shown.
