Cemeteries and cities coexist alongside each other, ever distinct yet closely connected. Burial sites, now integrated into the urban fabric, demand re-thinking such relations with the city of the living, raising new inquiries concerning the need to avoid further land consumption, address the progressive abandonment of heritage, respond to social and religious changes, and accommodate shifts in burial techniques. This volume, therefore, aims to address the matter of re-thinking and re-designing burial spaces, moving from the quite peculiar state of the cemetery system of the Poggioreale Hill in Naples, its positional values, types of burial spaces, features and potential of the edge between cemeteries and the city. Through a comparison between this leading case and further case studies located in Belgium, France, Germany, the Netherlands and the United States, all contributions reflect on possible prefigurations and new narratives by suggesting images and imaginaries as well as potential responses to the ongoing changes.
