Lazzaro Baldi celebrates the Academy of San Luca
Lazzaro Baldi celebrates the Academy of San Luca
The fortunate discovery of two allegorical paintings by the hand of Lazzaro Baldi, alluding to the system of the arts practiced in the Accademia di San Luca, is of important importance because it returns the only lively testimony, of high artistic quality, of the great decorative effort planned by the institution to celebrate the centenary of 1695 hitherto remembered only by literary sources. From the iconographic examination of the works emerges a synthesis of the ideological, philosophical and poetic debate that had been maturing during the last quarter of the 17th century aimed at legitimizing the centrality and identity relevance of the Roman institution in the sign of the continuity of humanistic founding ideals, the intellectual autonomy of artists and the guarantee of models revitalized by the plurality of contemporary languages.
