This book is the first updated comprehensive study on Ariosto’s Italian lyric poetry. Its aim is to contextualise the lyrics against their intellectual backdrop, showing how they interact with contemporary strands of lyric poetry while at the same time displaying a classicising effort. Among the topics addressed are the self-fashioning of Ariosto’s lyric voice, his ethics of love and his portrayals of women in verse.
