Ancient architectural restoration in the Greek world
Ancient architectural restoration in the Greek world
Architectural restoration is often perceived as an exclusively modern phenomenon. However, numerous sources attest to the fact that it was performed on a regular basis during Antiquity. This volume deals with architectural restoration in the Greek world, from the Archaic to the Roman period, and explores the various aspects (technical, institutional, cultural) of this practice using a variety of approaches, which include archaeology, architecture, epigraphy, conservation and archaeometry. Multidisciplinarity is indeed essential for understanding ancient architectural restoration in its complexity. Showing the diversity of ancient attitudes and techniques in various regions of the Greek world and at different times, the papers gathered here attest that the study of ancient restorations contributes not only to the history of construction, but also, more broadly, to our understanding of the relations of the ancient Greeks with their built heritage.
